One comparison is rarely the whole answer
A four-week study in untrained young men found a better average 5 km result after a sprint interval programme than in a non-training control group. It did not compare that sprint programme with an equally demanding steady running programme. The finding supports the possibility of improvement under those conditions, not the claim that sprints are always superior.
In a different randomized study, physically active men completed either continuous or interval running for eight weeks at matched external training load. Both groups improved maximal aerobic speed to a similar degree. A 2025 trial in 20 well-trained male distance runners reported some stronger performance measures for a sprint interval group than for a traditional training group over six weeks. The participants, programmes, and outcomes differed across these studies.
Why the distinction matters
A short maximal sprint makes different demands from a controlled faster interval in a longer run. Recovery time, overall training load, and what a person is already used to also change the experience. A result in trained male distance runners should not be presented as a prediction for a beginner, or for everyone who uses a chase mode.
Use the research as context
If you enjoy steady runs, there is no reason to treat every outing as a speed test. If you enjoy changes of pace, Raptor Run's Intervals mode gives a structure for chase efforts and recovery, while Hunted makes timing less predictable. The app's chase target is tied to your own recent pace and difficulty setting. It is not a demand to sprint flat out.
Neither the studies nor this article establish that Raptor Run improves a user's 5 km time. That claim would need research on the app itself. For now, the honest point is simpler: different training formats have shown benefits in specific studies, and a runner can choose the type of session that fits the day.
